Getting The Hive Ready for a New Colony
/April is one of the most exciting times in beekeeping, it’s when we prepare our hives for new colonies to arrive. After a long Maine winter, everything begins again.
Getting a hive ready starts with a full inspection. We clean out any debris left behind from winter and make sure the hive boxes are dry, sturdy, and ready for new life. Frames are checked and replaced if needed, and we prepare fresh foundations where bees will begin building their comb.
Location matters, too. Hives are placed where they’ll get morning sun, some afternoon shade, and protection from strong winds. Nearby early spring blooms: like dandelions, maples, and wildflowers, help give new colonies the food they need to get established.
For us, this process is more than just preparation… it’s a ritual. Each hive represents a fresh start, not just for the bees, but for the season ahead. With every new colony, we’re reminded how important it is to support pollinators and protect the ecosystems that sustain us all.
